The Love Affair: Miss G

In search for white freezies and iced coffee beverages, Addie, aka Miss G, and I perused Liberty Village, an unfamiliar area of downtown Toronto for me. I enjoyed the absence of sidewalks and these adorable cafes/bars/restos that seemed to cater itself to the young professionals that resided in the area.
Upon exiting the Remix Project studio, Addie filled me in on what she’s been doing there for the past four months — recording and producing her own mixtape album, the Best of Both Worlds, incorporating her spoken word poetry and new found dabble into rapping as an emcee. Born the same year as me, it was wicked to bond with another fellow young woman who’s out to take over Toronto with her passion and words.

Miss G was a bit different from my other interviews I was doing artist profiles on for the Love Affair, in that, she felt a bit awkward that all the attention was drawn upon her. She felt inclined to get to know my story as well, and flipped the script on me to ask me a few questions. It was refreshing to exchange our own separate stories, seeing how two opposite paths still somehow led us to meet each other.
“So what do you like to write or rap about?” I asked her, walking into the convenience store. “I never know how to answer that question, because I really just talk about… life! Anything and everything, really.” I have so much admiration for people who can just write songs or poems about the deepest ish, to the silliest things. It’s a dance with words and only so few are graced with the talent to be able to do so.

Arriving back at the Remix studio, Miss G and I kicked it outside where I filmed her performing one of her poems. Her rhymes, similes and metaphors had me doin’ a few good head nods (in my head) as well as a huge smile when she shouted out “Poutine.” (1/3 of my TOP FAVORITE FOODS in LIFE.)

I vibe Miss G, she’s young, brilliant, beautiful and has a long road ahead of her. She has a natural confidence in her, which you can gather right away especially hearing that she’s only been doing what she does for just a bit over a year. I respect that, and can only foresee bigger things happening in her future.
Catch Miss G tonight at AUGUSTA HOUSE for THE LOVE AFFAIR. I can’t wait to see what she decides to perform…
