MANIFESTO CHRONICLES: Day 5 T.O. Meet NYC

[Crazy Legs of Rock Steady Crew]

Walking into the empty art gallery, I tried to cool off from my intense bike ride over to 99 Sudbury. A hot 23 degrees at the end of September was a nice contrast to the cold Toronto had been experiencing throughout the entire month. Lunch Breaks with Crazy Legs from the legendary Rock Steady Crew was on my agenda for that Friday afternoon, along with interviewing Jean Grae with the Manifesto Doc Team, and then the T.O. Meet NYC concert that night at the Great Hall.

[Eternia and Crazy Legs]

What I thought would be a group gathered to see Crazy Legs do his weekly video podcast of Lunch, and Breaks, ended up becoming just Crazy Legs… and ME.

So are you like my overseer? They sent you to babysit me?” He said to me with a smirk on his face as he was setting up his laptop.

Slightly nervous, I said, “Naaaww, not even… I’m just chillin.” Motioning for me to move the couch closer to where he was spinning, Shalamar came on and upon extinct I got up and started grooving. It was chill, chill vibes up in that spot, like I had Crazy Legs as my own personal DJ for the afternoon. We were soon joined by Eternia, a sick female emcee, from Toronto and now doin’ her thing in NYC. More people came through and we had ourselves a party.

On our way to the Delta to interview Jean Grae, Mark and I drove Crazy Legs to his hotel. “… Whoah… that’s crazy… you’ve totally witnessed the come-up of hip hop, eh?” I asked suddenly allowing that realization to sink in. “Yeah…” He said, taking in what I just said. “So, how does that make you feel, to be considered, ‘Legendary’?” After a second of thinking, he responded humbly, “I just say Thank You.” “Word.”

I love that.

After throwing up the deuces and much ‘hasta luegos’ for the concert that evening, Mark and I headed inside the Delta to meet with Giles and Jean Grae. Taking some behind the scenes footage, I laughed to myself at the sarcastic, witty, and very interesting Miss Jean Grae. I’ve never known anybody else who ALSO wanted to be a ninja when they grew up. Lol.

The show at the Great Hall later on that night was live. We had our line up of Toronto artists and guest performers from Canada, and a few peeps from NYC took over the stage to grace us with their presence. Shouts to everyone who came through and showed love.
