The Love Affair: KG

After leading a workshop out at Kapisanan in Kensington Market, I left the freshly rained upon concrete in search for a place for food and comfort. Texting KG, the fourth artist who I had to do an artist profile on for The Love Affair, I hurried towards Spadina, the heart of Chinatown, with my mouth already watering for pork and dill dumplings.

Meet me at Mother’s Dumplings,” is what I quickly messaged KG as my blackberry began to blink a greenish-yellow, signifying it’s close-to-a-coma state. I arrived at the restaurant and waited for who I thought would be a black male emcee, someone who my friend Giles had corrected me was “KJ, don’t you mean KJ? Not KG.” Ohhhh great, I thought to myself… I totally even saved his name wrong on my phone, this whole time thinking I’m about to meet someone named KG.

“Char?” A female voice said to me as I looked up, and much to my surprise, there stood a beautiful black woman… wearing a collared red striped top, accented wonderfully with green gladiator sandals, and a guitar back pack slung around her shoulders. “Uhhh… Hi!!” I said, utterly confused. “So WAIT, is your name KG or KJ?! I’m SO confused!!”

Kgomotso Tsatsi, or KG, as most call her, is definitely not Japanese, but rather, South African. Moved here five years ago, KG dabbled in post-secondary education in Waterloo before she decided to make the move to Toronto to pursue music. “neo-fro” as she likes to describe her music, KG undoubtedly has more soul than I can even handle… and this is what I concluded before even listening to her perform.

Sitting at the back of Mother’s Dumplings, KG and I chatted non-stop, like two best girlfriends who haven’t seen each other in years. I love being able to insta-vibe with other incredible women, and I’m lucky to say that that happens a lot with me. Each encounter is unique and different, as it should be considering it’s the combination of a different pair every time, but KG and I definitely vibe the same wavelength. From boys, to what it’s like moving from another city, to just believing in the law of the universe and attraction, she and I were vibin’ hard on the same tip. It’s refreshing to meet another strong, courageous and confident woman in Toronto.

When we finally wrapped up dinner and decided to film her takeaway show, we thought it best to just do right then and there, at the back of the restaurant… And then when KG started singing… I preeetttyy much melted inside. There’s a reason she was top 5 for South African Idol… hot damn…

The entire restaurant fell into a soft hush when she sang, and I’m pretty sure you could hear someone singing riffs in the background… I swear… just WATCH this video and you’ll understand exactly what I’m talkin’ bout.

Thursday, Augusta House, The Love Affair… KG will melt all our hearts like an ice cream sundae on the fourth of July… sigh.
